Volunteers' Week: Steven - volunteering in Fife
Volunteers’ Week runs from 1-7 June. To mark the week, Get Out Get Active (GOGA) is celebrating volunteers’ positive impact on the programme. Meet Steven, a GOGA Fife volunteer.
Steven left school six years ago and is a GOGA in Fife peer mentor volunteer. He is arguably the most committed member of the Disability Sport Fife (DSF) volunteer force. Each week Steven commits 10 hours of volunteering to DSF and an additional four to his inclusive football club, Glenrothes Strollers. Steven has been involved with DSF for six years and GOGA in Fife for 18 months.
Steven became involved in volunteering when he was at school. His grandparents asked him to support his brother who has additional support needs and wanted to attend a gym session. Steven became involved in the gym session himself and has not looked back since.
With a passion for sport, Steven has made many friends through sport. He particularly enjoys working with individuals with severe and complex needs. He believes that the many volunteering opportunities that have come his way have helped him to appreciate the challenges that others experience in their efforts to enjoy sports.
Steven believes that his volunteering experience has made him a much stronger person and he has been offered access to lots of training courses. He believes he will improve his prospects for work through volunteering.
Volunteering has encouraged Steven to be more active and appreciate the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle. Something as simple as travelling on public transport with his brother and others to Edinburgh for a sports event was a very satisfying experience.
Steven tries to encourage others to give it volunteering a go. DSF coaches provide lots of support and there is lots of choice in the programme for others to follow Steven.
