Volunteers' Week: Myrtle - volunteeering in Northern Ireland
Myrtle McGuinness has volunteered as an Assistant Walk Leader for the GOGA Nordic Walk Programme in the GOGA locality Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon for three months.
Myrtle started out as a participant on the GOGA Nordic Walk Programme but after a while started to volunteer at the activity.
Myrtle said:
I enrolled as a participant with the walking group and realised that would enjoy helping with this particular activity. I have always enjoyed helping others and encourage others to take up and do whatever activity they enjoy.
Myrtle has volunteered for various groups over the years and thinks that volunteering is very rewarding for the volunteer and also for those you help.
She added:
I would encourage others to just say yes if asked to help out. It is a great way of getting out and getting active, of making friends and expanding your social life in addition to helping others to keep fit and healthy.
