GOGA partners with Parkinson’s UK and Cleethorpes Educational Trust

Get Out Get Active brought boxercise and chair-based exercise classes to those living with medical conditions in Humber.

Group of disabled and non-disabled people sat in a circle in a boxing gym taking part in an exercise session.

Through the programme, our partners Active Humber worked alongside Parkinson’s UK and Cleethorpes Educational Trust to provide boxercise and chair-based pilates classes to engage local people in social activity.

An initial activity group started back in 2019, but in-person sessions were paused when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. When it became safe to meet in person again in 2021, the group decided to bring the GOGA team on board to help secure funding and support the reach of the programme.

Get Out Get Active approached people aged 50+ who were struggling to take part in social activities. Taking care to reach out to those who were living with medical conditions to help them make new connections in the community.

After some consultations with local disabled and non-disabled people, it was clear that the activities people were most keen to try were pilates, boxercise and strength and conditioning classes.

The GOGA team were on hand to train leisure-based staff and volunteers, who were then able to guide participants through each session.

These activities have been running for over a year now and have proved to be a huge success. There are three weekly sessions which run at the Trinity Boxing Club, and twelve people on average attend each week.

As the programme goes from strength to strength, both Active Humber and Parkinson’s UK are developing physical activity sessions across the Humber area for people living with Parkinson’s. There are also plans to develop additional groups across North Lincolnshire.
